Senators agree to extend $8,000 housing tax credit for first-time buyers

The lawmakers also OK offering a tax credit of up to $6,500 to repeat buyers who have owned their current homes at least five years.

Associated Press
October 29, 2009
Senators agreed Wednesday to extend a popular tax credit for first-time home buyers and to offer a smaller credit to some repeat buyers.

The tax credit provides up to $8,000 to first-time home buyers but is set to expire at the end of November.

Senators agreed to extend the existing tax credit for first-time home buyers while offering a reduced credit of up to $6,500 to repeat buyers who have owned their current homes for at least five years, said Regan Lachapelle, a spokeswoman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).

The tax credits would be available to buyers who sign purchase agreements by the end of April. They would have until the end of June to close on their new homes, according to a summary of the legislation being circulated among lawmakers.

Senators were still negotiating the expansion of a separate tax credit that lets money-losing businesses get refunds for taxes paid in previous years, providing them with an immediate source of cash.

Senators in both major parties were hoping to add both tax provisions to a bill that would give people running out of unemployment insurance benefits up to 20 more weeks of federal aid. The Senate could vote on the overall bill as early as today, but lawmakers were still haggling over several unrelated amendments Wednesday evening.

Popular bills like the one to extend unemployment benefits often attract amendments that would have a difficult time passing on their own.

Republicans were demanding the opportunity to offer amendments to restrict federal aid to the community activist group ACORN and to require that people receiving unemployment benefits be processed through E-Verify, an Internet-based system that employers use to check on the immigration status of new hires.

The Senate's majority Democrats have blocked the proposed amendments.

If the Senate passes the bill, it would go to the House, which passed a similar bill extending unemployment benefits last month. House leaders have said they support extending the tax credit for home buyers.

Lawmakers didn't release a cost estimate for extending the tax credit, though similar proposals were projected to cost about $10 billion.

About 1.4 million home buyers have qualified for the existing credit through August. The National Assn. of Realtors estimates that 350,000 of them would not otherwise have bought their homes.

The government said Wednesday that new-home sales fell 3.6% last month. Some builders blamed the drop, the first since March, on uncertainty about the tax credit.

It takes 45 days to 60 days to close the deal on a house, making it unlikely that a sale made today would be consummated by the end of November.

Triathlon For A Cure: Fundraiser 10/28

Our friend, Mike Paskin is training for Ironman, Arizona in one month and is raising money through www.TriathlonForACure.com for the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation.  Please read below for more details.

This coming week there is a fundraiser aboard the Channel Cat and there are still spots available for Triathlon for a Cure’s inaugural fundraising event, benefitting the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation. Your $50 donation is your ticket onboard and includes a sunset cruise along the Santa Barbara coastline, appetizers by Rincon Catering, and an open beer and wine bar.

Come help us raise money to fight the battle against the #1 genetic killer of young children, SMA.  All donations go directly to the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation and 100% of the proceeds benefit SMA focused research, awareness, and support projects.
Donate here

Here is a letter from Mike:

TriathlonForACure.com functions as a place to offer support to the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation (GSF) and as a blog that will document my triathlon training and race schedule. By sharing my participation in the sport, I invite athletes and supporters to follow along my journey towards the Ironman Arizona triathlon this November.  In turn, I encourage you to find out more about the GSF and SMA and spread the word to others.

GSF was established by close friends of ours, Bill and Victoria Strong, after their daughter, Gwendolyn, who is the same age as our daughter, Reese, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) Type 1. SMA is a degenerative and terminal disease that causes weakness and wasting of the voluntary muscles in infants and children. Average life expectancy of those diagnosed is less than two years. Bill and Victoria have become champions for SMA awareness by raising funds for research, providing support to other newly-diagnosed families, and establishing the GSF.  Their strength and determination is inspiring.

Ironman will be the most challenging race I’ve competed in: 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run. Training has been rigorous, and I welcome advice, training tips, and encouragement to help ensure my race goes well.  My goal is to parallel the hard work and determination it takes to complete each triathlon with the hard work and determination it will take to eliminate SMA.  I am accepting sponsorships for the Ironman race and athletic gear will soon be available through the website, with all donations going directly to GSF.

Please take the time to read more about SMA and the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation. You can offer your support by signing the petition or donating to the foundation. I look forward to sharing my experiences in the sport and hearing from each of you along the way.
Sincerely,

Michael Jay Paskin

GREEN NEWS:
Breaking Down Building Energy Use
From: Jetson Green
We've all heard the numbers before, but here's a nice little chart with a helpful breakdown of information. Buildings account for roughly 40% of all U.S. energy use. Or stated with more particularity, residential buildings account for 22% of all U.S. energy use and commercial buildings account for 18% of all U.S. energy use. When you parse the numbers out, here's where that energy is used:
Residential Energy Use:
1% - Computers
5% - Cooking
5% - Wet clean
7% - Electronics
8% - Refrigeration
11% - Lights
12% - Cooling
12% - Water heat
31% - Heating

Commercial Energy Use:
2% - Cooking
3% - Computers
4% - Refrigeration
6% - Office equipment
6% - Ventilation
7% - Water heat
13% - Cooling
14% - Heating
26% - Lighting

Of course, there will be regional and building specific differences. For example, in Texas, you might use a lot more energy running the air conditioning equipment and maybe a little less energy running the heating. Also, it's interesting to see how much commercial energy is used on lighting, which is why the NY Times lighting experiment saved them some major cash on energy costs.
Also, consider this graph in the light of new technological advances relating to electrical vehicles and the smart grid. Ten years from now, is car charging going to be one of the major components of commercial and residential building energy use? And how's that going to affect the other pieces of the energy pie? Just thinking out loud, though ...

VOCABULARY LESSON:

Net Zero:
A zero energy building (ZEB) or net zero energy building is a general term applied to a building with zero net energy consumption and zero carbon emissions annually. Zero energy buildings are autonomous from the energy grid supply - energy is produced on-site. This design principle is gaining considerable interest as renewable energy is a means to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The Cancer Center of Santa Barbara

As a cancer survivor and healthy for over 18 years, each year I participate in the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara Walk/Run.  The weather was great for a race this morning, with it being overcast, although pretty humid!  My step-dad and I ran the 10k (6.2 miles) and my Husband and Mom ran the 5k (3.2 miles) and we all finished with smiles on our faces!

I have never seen this event so well attended and was very impressed with the turn out, almost 1000 runner/walkers and the delicious Four Seasons breakfast.  In fact, on the 2nd lap when I was questioning why I signed up for the 10k, I thought about the Biltmore eggs and kept on trekking!  Stay tuned for how much money was raised and thank you all for participating!

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the Walk/Run benefit the clinical research program at the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara.

Through their research program, cancer fighting agents are made available to adult and pediatric patients in our community. Clinical trials are vital to the evolution of cancer treatment. Today’s standard practices were all proven by clinical trials before they became generally available. While patients may choose to enter a trial to improve their own conditions, they also help map the future of cancer care for others. The Cancer Center of Santa Barbara is pleased to be able to offer more than twenty trials annually to local residents, a benefit not afforded by all cancer treatment facilities. In addition, funds from the Walk/Run support two post-doctoral fellowships in basic science research at UCSB, the UCSB Research Mentorship Program and medical and public education programs, including the Frontiers in Cancer Research lecture series.

These beautiful images are on the Cancer Center's Website.

New Noise Music Festival: www.newnoisesb.com

It makes me proud when the youth of Santa Barbara step up and get involved in our community. Jeff Theimer, a friend of mine since 1st grade is taking over the Santa Barbara music scene with the New Noise. Rock it Jeff!

When? The inaugural event will take place October 8-10, 2009.

New Noise Santa Barbara is a three-day music and digital media conference that will showcase emerging and established bands, host educational panels on the music industry’s hottest topics, present esteemed experts from all walks of the business, and serve as a place for players big and small to connect and plot the future of sound. New Noise will be equal parts classroom and playground, blending each day’s intelligent discussion and all-important networking with entertainment offered during the evening at venues large and small.
Where?

New Noise occurs annually in the beautiful seaside city of Santa Barbara, which offers the perfect mix of live music venues, interested and active local residents, an allure to out-of-towners, and a visitor-serving infrastructure (hotels, restaurants, etc.) to properly host a festival of this sort. Strategically located 90 miles north of Los Angeles and just a one-hour plane flight from the tech-savvy Bay Area, Santa Barbara is the ideal locale to discuss the convergence of music and digital media technology.
Conference/Registration Location:

The Canary Hotel: Reserve your hotel through New Noise Santa Barbara and save with our hotel partners!

JACK JOHNSON WILL BE PERFORMING A SHORT SET!!! GET YOUR TICKETS NOW WHILE THEY LAST. . . Arlington Theatre Box Office and here until 2pm.

&

Edward Sharpe &; The Magnetic Zeros:
Alex Ebert could easily double as some kind of indie-rock messiah. Fronting his new band, the 11- or 12-member strong Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Ebert appears onstage shirtless and barefoot, strands of shoulder-length hair tied back in a faux crown as he conducts his smiling, face-painted ensemble like a giddy choir director.
